Library Media Center

Across the United States, research has shown that students in schools with good school libraries learn more, get better grades, and score higher on standardized test scores than their peers in schools without libraries. As librarian here at Glassford Middle School, I work with teachers to change what is possible in the classroom and support learning opportunities with books, computer resources and more. No longer are school libraries just for books, they have become "school media centers" with computer resources that enable students to engage meaningfully with a wide variety of information. Research shows that school libraries have the tools to inspire literacy in learners of all ages. GHMS library offers a broad range of materials - reference, fiction, and nonfiction, and our collection addresses a broad range of reading levels. We have flexible scheduling which provides timely access to the collection by all students. GHMS library is a quiet place where students can work individually or in small groups on research and collaborative projects. I find it is extremely important to add new resources throughout the year to keep the collection dynamic.   School Libraries:
  • are critical for student achievement
  • have an important role in teaching
  • are leading the way for technology use in schools
  • inspire literacy
